French Military Medals & Awards from WW1, WW2 and More

France was in ancient times part of the Celtic territory known as Gaul or Gallia. Since the 17th century, the country has played a major role in European and world events including the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, the devastation of two world wars, political and social upheavals, and the loss of a large empire. A lot of these events were commemorated in medals, decorations, and awards.

The French national system of honors is divided into two categories: Honors awarded on behalf of the President of the Republic (such as the Legion of Honor, the Military Medal, or the National Order of Merit), and ministerial honors (such as ministerial orders and commemorative medals).

French Medals from Before WW1

Before World War I, French medals were primarily awarded for military valor and service. Some of the notable decorations included the Legion of Honor, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to recognize outstanding military and civilian achievements; the Military Medal, instituted in 1852 for acts of bravery by enlisted soldiers; and the War Cross, created in 1915 to honor acts of valor during wartime. These medals symbolized France’s long-standing tradition of honoring courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation.

French Medals from WW1

France played a significant role in World War I as one of the major Allied powers fighting against the Central Powers, primarily Germany and Austria-Hungary. Militarily, France faced the brunt of German aggression during the early stages of the war. The German invasion of France through Belgium, known as the Schlieffen Plan, aimed to quickly defeat France before turning east to confront Russia. However, French forces, aided by the British Expeditionary Force, managed to halt the German advance at the Battle of the Marne in September 1914. This marked a crucial turning point, preventing the Germans from achieving a swift victory.
