On this page, you will find all military and campaign medals, orders, awards, and decorations of the United States given during (and after) The Great War, or World War I. The country declared war on the German Empire on April 6, 1917 (three years after the beginning of World War I. Before entering the war, the United States had remained neutral while supplying the United Kingdom, France, and the other powers of the Allies. 

In the summer of 1918 and on the Western Front of the war, American soldiers arrived at the rate of 10,000 men a day. A total of 4 million military personnel was mobilized, while the country suffered the loss of 65,000 men.

During World War I, the United States played a significant role as one of the Allied powers. Initially, the United States adopted a policy of neutrality when the war broke out in 1914. However, as the conflict progressed and events like the sinking of the RMS Lusitania and the interception of the Zimmerman Telegram occurred, public sentiment in the U.S. shifted towards intervention. In April 1917, the U.S. officially entered the war on the side of the Allies.
