The Army Spanish Campaign Medal was established on 12 January 1905 to recognise soldiers of the United States Army who served in active campaign operations during the Spanish–American War. Eligibility was limited to personnel who served between 11 May and 16 August 1898 in one or more of the principal theatres of the conflict: Cuba, Puerto Rico, or the Philippine Islands. Unlike the Navy’s campaign medal, which recognised service aboard designated vessels, the Army medal was awarded to those who took part in military operations ashore within these campaign areas.
The decoration was awarded to officers and enlisted men who met the prescribed service requirements, and by 1 July 1923, a total of 7,667 medals had been issued. Although the medal was established several years after the war ended, it became the Army’s principal campaign award for veterans who had served overseas during the conflict.
Not all Army personnel who served during the Spanish–American War qualified for the Spanish Campaign Medal. Many soldiers remained on active duty within the continental United States, performing essential training, garrison, and support duties without deploying to the war zones. To recognise this important service, the Spanish War Service Medal was established in 1918. This separate decoration acknowledged Army personnel who served honourably during the war but did not meet the overseas campaign requirements for the Spanish Campaign Medal, ensuring that both combat-zone and home-service contributions were formally recognised.
Design
The obverse of the Army Spanish Campaign Medal bears the inscription “WAR WITH SPAIN” around the upper edge, with the date “1898” at the bottom. At its center is the depiction of a Spanish military fortification. Flanking the central image are two important agricultural symbols of Spain’s Caribbean colonies: a stalk of tobacco on the left and a stalk of sugar cane on the right. These elements evoke the principal theatres of the conflict, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The medal is suspended from a ribbon consisting of yellow with two blue vertical stripes, a design shared with the Navy and Marine Corps versions of the Spanish Campaign Medal.
